Panasonic claims that the Toughpad can be dropped up to 26 times from heights varying from 3 to 6 feet on every corner and surface. To protect the screen from face-down drops, its front bumpers extend significantly beyond the display and magnesium alloy body.
The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 proved completely functioning after being dropped from 4 feet onto the carpet with no significant performance changes. We dropped the tablet twice in a succession, once on its back and then on its face, and it exhibited no signs of harm after either drop.
1. Features
of Security
a. The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 has an embedded Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip that holds cryptographic keys for data protection.
b. You may also use the BIOS setup program to install or disable Computrace theft protection software.
c. You may also utilize the inbuilt Intel Anti-Theft technology to track down your Toughpad if it becomes lost or stolen.
d. Other tough devices, like the Xplore iX104C5, have a fingerprint scanner integrated into biometric authentication. The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 does not have this function as an option.
2. Display
a. The display on the Toughpad is one of the brightest we've ever seen. On our light meter, the tablet averaged 820 lux, which is much brighter than the Xplore M2's 1024 x 768 resistive 597 lux display and more than twice the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T's 329 lux and the tablet average of 366.
b. With the brightness turned up, the digitizer display was readily visible in bright sunshine. We had no trouble navigating the Windows 8 UI while reading the little text on each tile. Even with the sun beaming down on the screen, the text in news stories appeared clear and sharp.
c. During our testing, the
10-point display was responsive whether we used our fingers or the stylus.
3. Audio
a. For a tablet of this size, the Panasonic Toughpad FZ-bottom-mounted G1's speaker generated rich and rich sound.
b. The built-in Realtek audio provided a clear and defined listening experience, and blasting the volume to its maximum level was more than adequate to fill our testing space.
c. The voice and melodies of Of Monsters and Men's "Mountain Sound" sounded through crisply without any shallow or tinny distortion. Although the bass in Kanye West's "Black Skinhead" wasn't extremely deep, we could plainly hear it. The Touchpad FZ-G1 doesn't come with any audio editing software, yet the sound quality is adequate on its own.
4. Heat and performance management
a. Although Panasonic's rugged tablet is slim and light for a military-grade device, it can get hot.
b. The tablet's underbelly hit a warm 101 degrees during our heat test, which consisted of streaming video from Hulu on full screen for 15 minutes.
c. Anything beyond 95 degrees Fahrenheit is considered uncomfortably hot.
5. Performance
a. The Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 has a 1.9-GHz Intel Core i5-3437U CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB solid-state drive, which gives it adequate capability to perform multitasking and productivity activities like browsing the Web and streaming video.
b. We launched eight apps while launching five tabs in Internet Explorer throughout our testing, and there was little to no latency.
